In a recent article by Norra Halland, journalist Kristian Alm highlights our pilot project with the municipal housing company Eksta in Kungsbacka where the Mimbox has been put to the test in a busy communal laundry room. The results? They speak for themselves. In just six weeks, the project has already saved 16,000 liters (16 cubic meters) of water and prevented 1.2 kilograms of microplastics from entering our oceans.
The Challenge: Water Scarcity in Sweden
While Sweden is often associated with abundance, water scarcity is a growing reality. In Kungsbacka, as in many other regions, summer water conservation campaigns are becoming the norm.
For housing providers like Eksta, the mission is twofold: reduce the strain on the municipal drinking water supply and find sustainable solutions that make financial sense. As Jonathan Hagrenius, Head of Property Management at Eksta, notes:
"The environment is an equally important reason—for example, all the microplastics that aren't released, and all the drinking water that doesn't need to be used."
How the Mimbox Works
The Mimbox is an add-on solution that connects to professional laundry machines. Here’s the breakdown of how it transforms a standard laundry cycle:
Filtration: The system captures microplastics and synthetic fibers before they reach the drain.
Purification: Using UV light, the water is treated to eliminate bacteria.
Recycling: Clean, warm water is stored in a tank and reused for the next wash cycle.
Smart Sorting: If the water is too soiled (like after washing a heavy rug), the Mimbox intelligently directs it to the sewer, ensuring only quality water is recycled.
On average, the Mimbox at Eksta saves 26 liters of water per wash. To put the microplastic impact into perspective, the team at Eksta found they are capturing the equivalent of one credit card’s worth of plastic every four to five washes.
Efficiency Meets Reality
We know that for property managers like Joakim Runger, "ease of use" is just as important as "eco-friendly." Maintenance for the Mimbox is streamlined into a quick 10-minute weekly routine, fitting seamlessly into the existing property management workflow.
